The Weatheralls Wings At The Weatheralls we have been teaching lifelong learning skills. To recap, we call these skills and qualities the 5R's. These are: Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Resilience, Reflectivity and Reasoning. These skills and qualities are introduced in the Foundation Stage and progress in sophistication right through to Year 6. We are now introducing a system of recognition and reward for the children - but with a difference! For many subjects in school, children have their achievements formally recognised only after they have met a series of learning targets culminating, for example in the award of a mathematics level 3. For the 5R's we are going to reward 'commitment' to becoming a skillful lifelong learner. From Year 2 the children will work with the guidance of their teacher to build a future vision for themselves as a successful learner and make a commitment to working towards it. This commitment will be recorded on a personal 'Passport for Learning' issued at 3 levels - Bronze for Year 2, Silver for Years 3 and 4 and Gold for Years 5 and 6. This commitment to learning over a period of time will be recognised by the award of a bronze, silver or gold enamelled badge, appended to the Learning Passport. At the end of the period the badge can be taken home. We will call these special badges 'THE WEATHERALLS WINGS' to suggest that the children are flying with their learning! We all want our learners to have confidence, competence and high self esteem so that they can become better learners both in and out of school. The '5R's' gives children the language to talk about how they may become more successful learners. Rewarding 'commitment to achieving' rather than the achievement itself is and expression of our belief that the child can and will do their best and for some this will diminish a fear of failure. We may not all achieve a certain 'grade' but we can all celebrate a commitment to try.
